Project Duisburg2027

On June 11th 2007 the council of the city of Duisburg tasked the municipality with the realignment of the land use master plan as well as the initiation of a process of sustainable urban development, a citywide, strategic planning process with a time frame of 15 to 20 years.

The need for a new land use plan emerged from economic, social and environmental changes and altered global conditions, which the city of Duisburg has faced in the last decades. The current land use plan had been designed in 1986 and had lost topicality.

Based on the question "How do we want to live and work in Duisburg in the future?", the five-year scheduled project develops strategic goal statements and concepts for the future urban development of Duisburg. The project combines the formal land use process according to the German federal building code with informal planning processes. The project is called Duisburg2027 and is assigned to Duisburg's Urban Development Department.

Striking elements of the project are the interdisciplinary approach, a long-term and citywide vision and the early and far-reaching dialogue-orientated participation of Duisburg's citizens and experts.
